USER EXPERIENCE

AUTOCAD 360 ONBOARDING

Company:

Autodesk

Product:

AutoCAD 360 Mobile

Year:

2015

My Roles:

Interaction Design, UI Design, Motion design, Illustration

The Challenge:

Up until this point, AutoCAD 360 users would open the app for the first time and “greeted” with nothing but a Sign Up page. Analytics showed that a lot of people dropped off at this point, and talking to users or potential users, and usability testing, showed that users simply did not know what value the app could give them. They didn’t know what to expect, and did not intend to divulge details and open an account just to find out.

Process:

Along with the product team, we tried to narrow down to 3-4 main messages we would like to deliver to the potential user to convince them to sign up and give our product a shot.

Previous onboarding attempts were very focused on learning how to use the tool, and did not simply give an overview of what it can do.

Once the messages have been established, a method to deliver them in a short fun way was needed. At the time, it was trendy to use paging that is affected by the swipe motion of the fingers, a framework by IFTTT called “Jazz Hands”. It felt like a playful way to entice the user, along with simple one line explanations and animations.

Solution:

The paging onboarding was built in After Effects in order to see how it looks and feels, and was then ported to both Android and iOS using the Jazz Hands platform.

It required close work with developers, in order to place the objects, and animate them correctly throughout the paging process.

Another solution was to allow playing around with a sample drawing without actually signing up, a “Test Drive” feature. This was more difficult to pull off due to infrastructure and time limitations, so the simple introduction screens were the selected solution in the end.

This change was well received by users and improved conversion rate by 30% the first month so was considered a success. Personally, it felt like something that was long overdue, and combined several fields that i enjoy so was fun for me.
