VIDEOLEAP TRANSITIONS

Company:

Product:

Videoleap mobile video editor

2017

My Roles:

Interaction Design, Prototyping, UI Design

The Challenge:

When creating a transition between two video clips, the length of the transition effect affects the total length of the two clips, because it means that the overlap between them changes.

It was unclear to people why the two clips are shortened when the transition changes, so it was something that needed explaining or illustrating in some way.

Option 1: Stacking both clips

Option 2: Simplified, both clips remain in place

Solution:

After several drafts and tests, a solution was reached that showed the two clips one on top of the other, and highlighting the beginning and end of the overlap. Some drafts showed the first and last frames of the affected clips in place of the video preview, but this felt a bit confusing.

After the interaction was pretty much settled on, it seemed that while it shows the overlap, it doesn’t demonstrate the actual effect of the transition after the change.

In order to solve this, a player header line was added and the transition was autoplayed immediately after the transition was changed.

A simplified version was made to make the feature easier to develop, due to lack of time.
